Pacific IAQ is the North Bay’s leader in asbestos consulting. Asbestos is any of several fibrous mineral forms of magnesium silicate.
Since the company’s formation in 2009, we have provided consultation and testing services for building owners, insurance companies, remediation contractors, and property managers. Pacific IAQ’s comprehensive reports and remediation protocol guidelines have helped our clients comply with all state and federal asbestos regulatory requirements prior to rehabilitation or restoration of fire or water damaged structure projects. Our pledge to our clients is to do our absolute best to ensure the safety and health of the building occupants’ and abatement workers.
More About Asbestos and its History…
Unlike mold, asbestos is a federally regulated material. Building owners are required to have suspect materials sampled for asbestos prior to renovation or construction activities which may disrupt the matrix of the material.
Asbestos was widely used in construction materials decades ago because of its unique properties. It doesn’t burn, has high tensile strength, it’s a poor conductor of heat and electricity, it’s virtually impervious to chemical corrosion, and it’s strong fibers are a great binder for mastics, concrete, and surfacing materials. Additionally and historically, it was readily available and inexpensive. It would truly be the perfect product for building materials - if not for the undeniable and dangerous health hazards. What was initially unknown, is that exposure to airborne asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. All of these have a latency period of 10 to 40 years and are generally considered terminal illnesses.
It is important to note that although the use of asbestos was significantly restricted in the late 1970’s, it continued to be used in over 3000 products for decades thereafter, and can still be found in some products sold today.
Common building materials that contain asbestos include:
* Pipe insulation
* Wall and ceiling insulation
* Wall surface texture
* Acoustic ceiling texture
* Vinyl floor tiles
* Vinyl sheet flooring
* Mastics and adhesives
* Tape/joint compound
* Drywall Siding
* Roof shingles
* Roofing felt
If you are considering renovating your living or work space, or restoring after damage caused by water, fire or other incident, Pacific IAQ services include asbestos sampling of materials that may be disturbed during such a project. If asbestos is found, we can also provide detailed abatement specifications and protocol guidelines, as well as post-abatement verification sampling.
